2-day CSE Capital Market Fair 2008 in Sylhet kicks off today

SEC Chairman says this is a remarkable event, first of its kind in Sylhet

Sylhet, March 28, 2008: A two-day exhibition styled ‘CSE Capital Market Fair 2008’ begins at a local community center Hafiz Complex, Dhopadighirpar in Sylhet today aiming to promote Bangladesh Stock Market among the different professionals and General Investors of the Sylhet region. Chittagong Stock Exchange in collaboration with its Sylhet based Members are organizing the fair, first of its kind in Sylhet.

Mr. Faruq Ahmad Siddiqi, chairman of Securities and Exchange Commission, formally inaugurated the event as chief guest. In his address Mr. Siddiqi said, “SEC is monitoring overall activities of both the bourses including listed companies, punitive actions has taken when required for the safety of the market.” “Chittagong Stock Exchange has taken a pragmatic initiative for the general investors based in Sylhet through organizing the fair which will create an opportunity to learn about our Stock Market. Our Stock Market is now spreading in different cities of the Country. Till few years back, investors in remote areas could not even think to invest in our Stock Market, but online share trading through both the bourses paved the way to the investors to invest in this investment segment. ” He further said the stock market indices touched four months high last week buoyed by positive sentiments following dividend declaration by the most of the financial institutions and heavyweight companies. Although volatility has increased, overall market trend is healthy. “My request to the general investors is that do not depend on others suggestion especially during the time of placing orders, rather invest on your own decision after analyzing all the facts and figures of a company. Sometimes it is seen that price movement of some scrips behave irrationally due to overheat by a buoyant pressure. The investors should be cautious all the time particularly while investing in share market,” the SEC chief added.

Mr. Md. Abdullah Bokhari, President of Dhaka Stock Exchange in his speech as special guest, said, “ The entrepreneurs in Sylhet will be encouraged to raise fund from Capital Market through IPO process as the total concept of the methodology is getting clear through organizing different kinds of awareness program in Sylhet. This is appreciable that we are here to assist them, in future more cities in the country will get same opportunity.”

Mr. Nasiruddin Ahmed Chowdhury, president of CSE, addressing the function said, “This is an opportunity for you all to convey the message of Capital Market Fair to your friends and investors. This Capital Market Fair will enable a person to make contact face to face with the Brokers and CSE. Many of our investors are still shy of the market. It is our duty to make them understand that the market has become stable and there are lots of opportunities to make money from this market. This fair is going to be the rendezvous of investors, where investors will be able to get their questions answered.”

Mr. Fahoruddin Ali Ahmed, vice-president of CSE, in his welcome speech said, “Our brokers have lots of duty who have branch offices in different places of the country. Let introduce this example and organize many events like Capital Market Fair in Dhaka and Sylhet and if possible in Khulna, Rajshahi, Barishal and Cox’s Bazar or in any other cities.” He also said that participants might be felt reluctant to attend in the fair, but after some days it will be a really effective event for the Capital Market. While sharing his experience of this fair, he said Stock Exchange of Thailand is spending millions of dollars for marketing and CAPITAL MARKET FAIR is one of the very effective marketing tools. He emphasized that the subject of Capital Market should be included in the secondary school curriculum and onward. The subject is very important and it will make aware the future generation about the capital market.
Mr. Siddiqur Rahman, Director of CSE in his speech said, “The people in Sylhet are now much equipped to lead the nation as entrepreneur, CSE has given that platform by which employment generation in Sylhet is moving fast than it was not in the past.”

Mr. Al Maruf Khan, FCA, vice-president of CSE, in his vote of thanks said, “We always focus on infrastructural development of the CSE. This Capital Market fair gives an opportunity to know some about capital market and its stake holders like broker, dealer, SEC etc. It Media’s role in developing a strong capital market is very crucial. Whatever we do for the betterment of the market, unless it is widely and positively broadcast, it has no value. I am very grateful to the media, as it is playing its due role so far, and I hope, it will continue to do so for the betterment of the capital market.”
